Master bedrooms 1 & 2 are located upstairs in the main building and are both as sleek and sexy as each other. Lined with huge blow up images from the owner’s travels around Indonesia, each bedroom has white linens, hardwood floors, a high-pitched ceiling and wide views of the ocean from not only the king-size bed and the stone-paved balcony, but from the bathtub and shower as well. The bathrooms carry a nautical theme of seahorse- and starfish-shaped fittings to complement the ever-present sight of the ocean. To the rear of each bedroom, a spacious dressing areas faces away from the sea and yields to rice fields and a volcanic horizon.
In the antechamber between the master bedrooms is a large sitting area with two white painted daybeds and a wooden table under a translucent white skylight. Glass doors open out to a furnished stone terrace with ocean and garden views.

Guest bedroom 1 is situated in the gardens, just below the pool. This room is bathed in natural sunlight courtesy of two sets of sliding glass doors, one of which leads out to a stone terrace overlooking a manicured lawn and two very inviting hammocks. A king-size bed rests on a raised plinth beneath a stone frieze depicting tropical palm fronds and frangipani flowers, while two white leather easy chairs just beg to be sat upon and a large white wardrobe provides plenty of storage. A semi-open outdoor bathroom with monsoon shower and a bathtub invites guests to experience bathing under the sun and stars.

Guest bedroom 2 sits next to a garden of wild grasses and flowers, a little further along the garden pathway. Sliding doors open onto a wooden deck, bringing the outdoors in. This room is furnished with a white-painted king-size bed and two dark wooden wardrobes. A large wooden lamp and an Indonesian totem sit alongside a zebra striped leather chair, while a huge image depicting a school of tropical fish reminds guests which country they are in. The bathroom features a sunken open-air tub with hand-held shower for more outdoor glory.

Guest bedroom 3 lies at the very bottom of the garden, amidst a grove of juvenile palm trees. Two inviting lawn chairs rest on the terrace taking in this miniature forest setting while, inside, the room is dominated by a blonde-wood king-size bed, flanked by wicker lamps and heralded by a bird carving. Two similar coloured wardrobes provide storage, while more tantalising images of Indonesian island-life adorn the walls. The open-air bathroom is noteworthy for its water wall and cleverly designed, monsoon shower that looks as though it could be a time portal to another dimension.

In the main house, Ombak Putih’s air-conditioned white and blue themed living room is furnished with two comfy sofas and chairs and an antique coffee table all set before a 46-inch TV with satellite channels and a Blu-Ray disc player. Antique wooden artefacts and a Balinese gong adorn the room and sliding glass lead out from here to the garden. Through a pair of blue-painted traditional Balinese doors is a glass-shelved cupboard and a thoughtfully positioned guest washroom.

Separated from the living area by the grand central foyer, the dining room and kitchen are dominated by a very long and very beautiful suar wood table with seating for ten lit by three hanging lanterns with huge woven bamboo shades. A montage of aqua-blue images embellish the walls alongside tribal shields from Papua. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors at one end of the dining area provide garden views and lead out to the pool and terrace.
The villa has an enviable, air conditioned feature kitchen that’s almost over-equipped with serious brand-name appliances. Characterised by a wall of rough-cut marble mosaic and polished concrete work surfaces, the kitchen includes a massive central island lit by three hanging lanterns and accompanied by four wooden bar stools.

The sunken pool lounge is sure to see the lion’s share of daytime activity given its very social poolside situation among the gardens. Open on three sides, it features a kitchen area and guest washroom, a wooden bar, antique Indonesian daybeds that serve as tables, bar stools, and wide, built-in sofas with enough seating room for a small army. Above, on the rooftop terrace, daybeds beckon for sunbathing and sunset cocktails.The alfresco dining area sits to the right of the pool between the sunken lounge and a patio area lined with river stones and furnished with two all-weather couches. The main two-storey building houses one of the guest bedrooms, the children’s room, the
master suite, and an office with a library for guest use. The heart of this home away from home is the open plan living-dining room which leads to two adjoining kitchens, a TV room, office and two guest washrooms. A solid wood staircase rises to the upper floor and four of the villa’s five ensuite bedrooms. The living-dining room extends out to the infinity-edge pool and deck area, where stone steps cut through three terraces of exquisite gardens, leading down to the Balinese open-air lounge pavilion (Open Living), the spa and three thatched balés.

The villa compound is reached by a driveway with garage (maximum parking four cars) and staff quarters on the right-hand side. On arrival, guests are led through an entrance of wooden doors, stone statues and an alang alang (Balinese thatch) roof, to a delightful koi-filled water feature and porch reception area.

All four ensuite bedrooms are located in two, separate outdoor wings in the gardens, flanking the pool’s left side. Each is individually named after a Hindu god and varies in character and décor, but all are exquisitely furnished with antique pieces personally sourced by the owners. Rooms feature dark wood floors and king-size beds with four-poster frames and attached mosquito nets. Quality white bed linens are draped with old, hand-woven Sumbalese throws, while soft furnishings vary in colour in each room. All rooms supply safety deposit boxes and air conditioning (apart from bedroom three, all have traditional high ceilings with fan). Bathrooms, especially those of bedrooms one and two, are a strong feature. All are fitted with stylish stainless steel his n’ hers Grohe sinks, white stone floors and separate stone wall partitions disguising the toilet and shower. Centre-stage is an indulgent circular stone bathtub.

Villa Hansa sleeps eight guests, and an additional baby cot and rollaway bed can be provided upon request. Lying close too the main pavilion and right beside the pool, these two bedrooms are contained in a one-storey wing with serap roof. They are entered through glass patio doors.

Bedroom one, Brahma (‘God of Creation’) offers a creative mix of old and new, with striking contemporary Balinese art contrasting with antique pieces such as stone Buddha heads. Traditional wooden doors lead through to a tropical outdoor bathroom, comprising high walls encircling a lush garden area with simple Balinese-style shower, – as well as the features common to all the bathrooms mentioned above.

These two bedrooms are housed in a double-storey modern wing beyond the pool, surrounded by tropical foliage. Contemporary in design, rooms here contain more understated, traditional art and décor. On the ground floor, bedroom three, Ciwa (‘God who destroys negative energy’) features floor-to-ceiling windows and a low, flat ceiling without ceiling fan. Leading out from the bedroom, the large porch with poly-rattan daybed and antique Javanese wooden chairs offers views of the gardens and terraced rice fields opposite. The bathroom is also more contemporary than those in the other wing. Apart from a small outdoor shower area, the grey-hued room is indoors. Facilities follow the other bathrooms’ format, but with only one sink.

On the first-floor, bedroom four, Ganesha (‘God of wisdom and prosperity’) is reached by an outer stone stairway. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows look out over the pool, and the large private balcony with outdoor furniture offers the best views from the villa, overlooking the terraced rice fields, river and gardens. The bathroom is similar to that in bedroom three.

The property’s heart, an open-plan and open-sided living pavilion, is edged at the rear by a stunning water-wall feature which provides a constant soothing backdrop. A lounge area on the right is furnished with two white leather sofas and contrasting antique wood chairs and table, all arranged on warm Borneo-wood flooring; Indonesian artifacts, stone statues and vases of exotic blooms add a decorative touch. From the traditional vaulted ceiling hangs a huge lamp made with Tibetan characters encased in shell pieces – this Tibetan element is a recurring theme throughout Villa Hansa.

The central dining area comprises an expansive table crafted from solid teak wood, seating ten. To the left and on a lower level, the open-plan kitchen is contemporary in style and well equipped; a small guest washroom plus staff quarter’s leads off from here. Being open to the elements, this pavilion doesn’t have air conditioning, but is kept cool by ceiling fan and natural breezes; bamboo blinds run along the entire front length, which looks out across the garden and pool. In keeping with the spiritual ambiance of the villa, this pavilion is without a TV or DVD player, but an iPod and dock is provided for musical diversion.

The stand-alone yoga room is situated behind the kitchen and accessed via a high-walled stone corridor and up a staircase. Sunlight streams into this glass-encased, lofty-ceilinged room which comes tastefully decorated with antique pieces and furniture, including a Javanese carved wood table and Buddhist stone statue. Floors are of polished dark woods, littered with Balinese floor cushions. Continuing the spiritual theme, a striking chandelier-style ceiling lamp features 108 miniature Buddhist characters in individual glass pieces. Although designed for yoga (several yoga mats are supplied), this multi-functional room also contains the villa’s only TV (29-inch plasma TV with 380 channels), plus DVD / CD player and Bose sound system. Surrounded by rice fields and picturesque rural scenery, Villa Hansa is situated in Delod Padonan, one of several villages within the sleepy coastal suburb of Pererenan, part of Bali’s Badung District.

This small community offers a predominantly local flavour and opportunities to experience traditional Balinese culture; unlike other villages in the area, there is, as yet, no foreign development here. Hiking through the surrounding rice fields is possible and several naturally beautiful beaches renowned for their surf are within easy access. The nearest beach is Pererenan, at a walkable 300m, while legendary surfing spot, Echo Beach, is ten minutes by car. Bali’s premier sports and leisure club, the Canggu Club, is a 20-minute drive and offers upscale international-standard dining and leisure facilities. Bali’s most fashionable and cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak, is around 25 minutes’ drive south; crammed with chic boutiques and hip n’ happening bars and restaurants.

This four-bedroom residence (plus additional lumbung bedroom), set in lush tropical gardens, belies its age and has been thoughtfully updated with modern comforts and luxuries as it has matured. Contemporary tropical Asian influences – timelessly stylish yet informal and comfortable – complement the villa’s solid western architecture. There are so many inviting indoor–outdoor living spaces at Villa Shamira, including several dining areas, hidden patios and a poolside balé (gazebo), that it’s quite a challenge to fully enjoy them all. These, along with its charming bedrooms and a centre-stage 12m swimming pool surrounded by a sociably-sized stone pool deck, make Villa Shamira ideal for entertaining in style and lounging in luxurious comfort.

Set within private tropical gardens, Villa Shamira is western-style in design, comprising three, yellow-hued buildings topped with tiled roofing. Quality materials, including teak, distressed woods, marble and Palimanan stone are used throughout. The ground floor of the central, double-storey building houses a large, open-sided living and dining area, TV room, kitchen and bathroom. On the upper floor, three bedrooms and an outdoor dining patio are accessed via a teakwood staircase.

To the left of the main building and accessed via a garden patio stands a single-storey detached wing aptly named the garden room, containing bedroom number four. A separate wooden staircase to the right of the living and dining area leads to an extra bedroom (without ensuite bathroom), known as the lumbung room – its distinctive curved roof a clue to the traditional touches that lie within.

A contemporary tropical Asian style pervades at the heart of Villa Shamira where the expansive, open-sided living and dining area, fringed with foliage and cooled by natural breezes and ceiling fans, provides a variety of relaxed, informal living spaces. Throughout, there’s an eclectic mix of family photos, brimming bookcases, vases of tropical blooms, and antique Indonesian furniture and artefacts.

Facing the pool, a marble-floored dining area with a low sloping white timber roof above a long wooden table for ten, affords a boathouse effect. Flanking either side is a pretty blue and white cushioned daybed and a traditional-style seating area on a raised platform, providing two sublime spots for pre-dinner drinks. Adjacent, there’s a smaller dining area for more intimate soirees. Two further dining tables and an antique daybed stacked with white cushions furnish the centre of the living and dining area while, at the far end, is the expansive TV room. Functional in design, this air-conditioned and entirely glass-encased room houses the villa’s only TV – a 40-inch flat-screen satellite TV with DVD player – which can be enjoyed from the comfort of white suede couches. A CD stereo system, iPod dock and multiple speakers are perfect accompaniments for get-togethers and pool parties. Also off the living and dining area is a modern corner kitchen, fully-fitted with white painted wood cabinets, which is compact, yet well-equipped.

The pretty, natural stone, 6 x 12m swimming pool dominates the garden to the rear of the villa; its submerged ledge just made for sunset drinks. A generous stone pool deck is furnished with five rattan sun-loungers. To the right, four woven rattan pod chairs and a large table are stunningly illuminated at night by a spherical lantern resembling a golden moon. At the pool’s opposite end stands a thatched balé stacked with comfy cushions – a gloriously peaceful spot for reading and siestas – while along the sides of the villa, yet more outdoor sitting areas can be found. The gardens feature lawns dissected with stone steps and edged by lush, tropical flora, such as banana plants and tall palm fronds, encircled by a combination of stone walls and bamboo fencing.

Villa Shamira is located on a small lane straddling two beach roads. A pleasant stroll of under ten minutes along either road brings you to Canggu Beach. The road to the left (Jalan Batu Balong) takes you to Canggu Beach ‘proper,’ frequented mostly by locals, especially at dusk, and providing only simple food outlets. However, just before you reach the beach, you’ll find the divine Hotel Tugu, one of Bali’s most celebrated hotels, with excellent restaurants and a fascinating and charming bar area.

The road to the right of Villa Shamira (Jalan Batu Mejan) leads to Echo Beach, a long-time surfer’s haunt that increasingly caters to visitors with spas, boutiques and a diverse range of eateries. A circular walk – particularly lovely at sunrise or sunset – takes you along the beach and past an ancient temple where Hindu ceremonies invariably spill out onto the beach.

Tanah Lot and the championship Greg Norman designed Nirwana golf course are only 15 minutes away.

The entrance courtyard is studded with fragrant frangipani trees, western sunset views over terraced rice fields and the peaks of Gunung Agung to the north. The villa sits on over 2700 meters of gently sloping tropical gardens mixed with expansive areas for lawn games. An 18 m X 4 m infinity lap pool reflects the terraced rice fields and gently swaying coconut palms that border the property.

Villa Sabana was designed for the enjoyment of one to three families or five couples. The 650 square meter villa’s contemporary, tropical architecture blends teak plank floors contrasted against white cut palimanan stone walls and coffered ceilings. The owners, long term residents in Asia, have created a peaceful ambiance by combining Asian antiques with modern custom designed pieces imported from throughout the region. Beautiful fabrics enhance each bedroom and sitting area, adding an aura of simplicity and comfort. An extensive collection of contemporary Asian artwork and artifacts are spread throughout the villa. Balconies and sitting porches have been positioned to capture the stunning overlook of verdant rice fields and distant mountains.

There are four buildings spread across the property:

The main residence is two stories with two master bedrooms upstairs both with king size beds, en suite marble bathrooms, rain showers, tubs and dressing areas. The first bedroom is decorated with contemporary teak furniture designed by the owners while the second bedroom features antiques hand-chosen from specialty shops throughout Bali. Both bedrooms have central air-conditioning and private porches. There is a large upstairs sitting porch providing dramatic views in three directions. Downstairs in the main residence are two bedrooms each with twin four poster beds, antique side tables and daybeds to accommodate a third child. Both downstairs bedrooms have outdoor showers. There are private porches with daybeds if one wishes to escape for a quiet read. All four bedrooms are accessed through a separate entrance which can be closed to create a private space within the larger villa – a design element the owners included for those with smaller children. The dining room in the main residence continues the elegant simplicity of the villa with a large modern te4ak table to seat 12. Antique cabinets complement the modern table and chairs. The dining room can be air-conditioned or features large teak doorways that can be left open to capture cool tropical breezes.
The media/game room is an independent structure which features a 47 inch flat panel television, DVD and iPod docking station. A large overstuffed couch and antiques fill the room adding a comfortable, relaxing destintion after a day by the pool. There are games and puzzles for the children as well as a selection of DVDs. The media room is fully air-conditioned, but as with most of the villa has large teak doors which can be slid open for breezes.
The fifth bedroom located to the left as you enter the compound is called the “Chinese room” by the staff. The gracefully carved antique Chinese screen that acts as a headboard is from the owner’s private collection. The room has a large built in daybed to accommodate a child. The fabrics on both the bed and daybed reflect the room’s Asian décor. The en suite marble bathroom is large with double sinks, a tub with a garden view and both indoor and outdoor showers. There is central air-conditioning throughout the fifth bedroom and a private porch with daybed.
Villa Sabana was designed as a family home. There is plenty of space for children to run and play lawn games. For adults there are wide choices of relaxing areas spread throughout the compound. Our service team is child friendly and arrangements can be made for babysitting ahead of time. Our chef is well versed in the preparation of local, international and children’s fare. The skilled artisans of Demak in Central Java cleverly carved Joglo houses using traditional tongue and groove techniques, forgoing any use of nails in the design. Finely carved, the Joglo features finely carved pillars fluted with delicate floral patterns and symmetrical intricate layers of mandala style artwork in the ceiling.

The Joglo is a peaceful centerpiece, an open-air living area that appears to be floating on water, surrounded by a 21-meter lagoon swimming pool that curves amidst the orchids and frangipanis. Complete with a table for fine dining set with antique cutlery and crockery, a relaxing lounge with plantation chairs in which you can while the evening away and comfortable corners to curl up in with an interesting book, the joglo typifies the best in tropical Asian luxury.
The Bungalows

There are three separate early 20th century style bungalows with oversize antique Balinese beds, en-suite grand bathrooms and tropical outdoor showers.
You will awake on Egyptian cotton sheets surrounded by one of Indonesia finest collection of antiques, wash in a pedestal washbasin or soak in a scented flower bath under an outdoor Indonesian bale.

Two of the bungalows have wide verandahs and den-libraries full of interesting books, attached to the bedrooms. The third bungalow has an upper open pavilion for sunset cocktails with adjacent butler’s pantry and guest toilet. The open pavilion houses a traditional Javanese day bed and an old Chinese rocking chair, a perfect shady area to disappear into with a book. Complete with a kitchenette/butler pantry, this self-contained pavilion is perfect for friends sharing the residence.
The Water Features and Garden

An important feature in the design of VILLA DES INDES was the effect of being surrounded by water. This nobleman’s former residence appears to float on water with a twenty-one meter lagoon swimming pool surrounding the centerpiece joglo.

Upon entering the property you are surrounded by an Asian fishpond with floating water lilies and teaming with koi fish, an amusing site to watch at feeding time! With traditionally carved antique stone dragon head water spouts blanketed in moss, the constant sound of gentle running water adds to the natural ambience of the residence.

Tropical palms and fragrant frangipanis are so very relaxing instead. Statues hide amongst the foliage and orchids hang from shady trees. The garden has a calm and peaceful tranquility, truly a botanical paradise.

With passion for preserving and sharing the rich culture tapestry of Indonesia, the owners have an extensive collection of Balinese and Javanese antiques. One of the most delightful things about residing in V ILLA DES I NDES is that there is always something fascinating to look at.

The extensive collection is housed in Villa Des Indes in Bali. Having the privilege to not only view but also to be surrounded by these fascinating artifacts is a pleasure in itself. Each piece has its own story; the paintings by famous early artists, the old traveling desk with removable legs, and the more modern pieces such as the 1940 radio, weighing scales as well as numerous original Dutch East Indes travel posters.
